Wollersheim Winery Named Winery of the Year at San Diego International Wine Competition
-Proving their Worth in PLATINUM!-
Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin - The year is off to an award-winning start for Wollersheim Winery. Not only is 2012 a milestone year for the family-run winery as they celebrate their 40th anniversary, but they were just named "Winery of the Year" at the San Diego International Wine Competition (SDIWC), held March 10 - 11, 2012 in San Diego, CA. Over 1,754 wine entries from the United States and 12 other countries. California's Napa Valley was well represented and had several top wines, but the Wollersheim Winery turned heads with a record number of awards, receiving the coveted platinum medals for their Dry Riesling as well as their Wisconsin-grown Prairie Blush. Two additional Platinum awards were given for their Cedar Creek line with Waterfall Riesling and La Belle Vie wines. Additional awards included Best of Show in the Riesling category for White Riesling and Best of Show for the Seyval grape category with the winery's famous, Prairie Fume'.
Though it may surprise some that a winery tucked into the bluffs along the southwest portion of the Wisconsin River makes wine, the rich history of the property paired with the hard work, dedication and skill crafted over the past 40 years continues to be an award-winning success... and surprising palates year after year. This year's competition in San Diego was no exception. As Robert Whitley, Director of the SDIWC, put it, "...the Napa Valley thunder was stolen by a winery from Prairie du Sac, Wis. Strange but true."
Yet the group of international winemakers, restaurant owners and sommeliers judging at SDIWC were enthusiastic in their praise of the Wollersheim wines.
"I was amazed at how precise and clean they were," said winemaker David Hopkins of Santa Barbara's Bridlewood.
The news of the accolades excited the winery and made faithful Wollersheim fans proud that a little winery snuggled in the heart of the Midwest is making a serious splash in the wine world - and eliciting international curiosity and attention.
"It is a good feeling to be recognized for all our hard work by our peers, especially among the best of California and the world," winemaker Philippe Coquard said. "It's our entire team that deserves to be rewarded with such prestigious recognition. We always do the best that we know how, and will continue to learn and have fun doing it."
