Wollersheim Port Wine Release Highly Anticipated (Jan. 2010)

-- January 30 Release Celebration Offers Jazzy Break from Winter --

Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin – Looking for a break from winter? Visit Wollersheim Winery on Saturday, January 30 to help celebrate the release of the eagerly awaited Port 2008, plus their very limited Tawny Port 2005. "This is one of the most exciting events of the year," notes Winemaker Philippe Coquard. "What a nice way to relax and spend a cold winter day in Wisconsin! Anticipation continues to build since our ’07 Port sold out back in early fall, so we can’t wait to share the ’08.”

Wollersheim’s Port wine label with a dancing lady dressed in red captures the festive, jazzy spirit of the wine and this event. Running from 10am to 4pm, the Port Celebration offers wine tasting, light food, live music, and leisurely learning. Sip Port or a variety of other Wollersheim wines available for purchase by the glass, while listening to the "EnFuego Jazz Trio." Enjoy Wisconsin cheese and locally-made chocolate truffles, bread and nuts all selected by Winemaker Philippe to complement the Port and available for purchase as a plate combination.

In lieu of regular winery tours, visitors are invited behind the scenes for a self-guided tour during Saturday's Port Celebration. This special Port Tour offered 10am until 4pm highlights the winemaking techniques used for Port and takes guests through the winery’s modern fermentation facilities, historic stone wine cellars where the Port ages in barrels, as well as the original 1858 winery building. Hear from Winemaker Philippe, as he shares insights on the making of Port throughout the day in the winery’s Sugarloaf Room.

Wollersheim Winery prides itself on making Port the traditional way, the way it was done in Portugal, where Port wine or Porto originated. Not familiar with Port? It is a grape wine fortified with grape brandy. The brandy, added at a specific time chosen by the winemaker, stops fermentation leaving the natural sweetness of the grapes. Wollersheim Port is aged in American oak barrels for 13 months, while the Tawny Port 2005 is aged much longer, aging a total of 5 years in barrels. Port is considered a sipping wine because of the higher alcohol content (20%) compared to most table wines. Once opened, Port wine remains good for weeks.

Winter in Wisconsin just got warmer! For more information about Wollersheim Winery Port or the upcoming Port Release Celebration on January 30, call (608) 643-6515 or visit www.wollersheim.com/events.asp.
